Mourinho back at Real Madrid wants Sami Khedira as assistant coach
Newly appointed Real Madrid manager José Mourinho is reportedly trying to convince former midfielder Sami Khedira to join his coaching staff as an assistant, according to Spanish newspaper AS. The path to Pepe appears to have faded.
José Mourinho, freshly named Real Madrid manager, is seeking to recruit Sami Khedira as an assistant coach, according to Spanish newspaper AS. The German, who has no experience in a technical staff, would be the Portuguese coach’s priority to complete his coaching team.
Khedira knows Mourinho well: the defensive midfielder was one of the key players under the tactician during his first spell on the Real Madrid bench, between 2010 and 2013. He then wore the white shirt until 2015 before joining Juventus, accumulating 189 appearances across all competitions with the club. World Cup winner with Germany in 2014, he has since reinvented himself as a consultant for German television, where he regularly appears on major European fixtures.
No official decision has yet been announced. The other candidate mentioned to join the staff, defender Pepe, appears to have lost ground in this matter.
Moreover, Mourinho’s influence is already being felt on the club’s summer recruitment. The finalization of Marc Cucurella’s transfer and the ongoing arrival of Bernardo Silva were reportedly facilitated by the new manager’s pitch to the targeted players.
