Motherwell have appointed Alfred Johansson as their new manager, the club announced this week, turning once again to a data-driven recruitment process to fill the vacancy left by Jens Berthel Askou’s departure to Toulouse.

Johansson, 35, arrives from Norwegian club Rosenborg, where he spent two and a half years as head coach before leaving last month following a difficult start to their current campaign. Despite the underwhelming exit, his appointment continues a clear pattern at Fir Park: chairman Kyrk Macmillan confirmed the club used the same analytical framework that identified both Askou and his predecessor Michael Wimmer.

“Following the same data-driven process that we undertook to appoint the previous two managers of the football club, we believe Alfred is an excellent fit here at Motherwell,” Macmillan said on the club’s official website. “The data plays a key role to ensure the game model aligns with how we want to play and continues our evolution, but the process is also blended with ensuring we bring good people to the club.”

Askou had set a high bar, steering Motherwell to a fourth-place Premiership finish in his only full season — a run that earned the club European football next month and attracted the attention of Ligue 1 side Toulouse. Johansson is now tasked with sustaining that momentum from the moment pre-season begins.

“This is a huge honour for me,” Johansson said. “Last season was hugely successful, and I want to be able to carry this success forward. The squad of players we have is exciting, and we will get to work straight away. There is no time to waste with European football next month and the league season starting in a few weeks.”

Johansson’s coaching career began without the foundation of a professional playing career. He started as a youth coach at Swedish clubs Enkopings and Djurgardens before taking on academy roles at AIK and Danish giants Copenhagen. Rosenborg handed him his first senior head-coach appointment in December 2022 at the age of 33.

Macmillan acknowledged the pressure of timing, with the squad already back in for pre-season. “It was important for the squad that we completed our detailed process of recruiting a new manager, but we were also conscious of time,” he said, adding that Johansson “stood out as the best candidate to continue our journey at the club.”
