Morocco reaches 6th place worldwide, best FIFA ranking in its history
Benefiting from Portugal's draw against DR Congo (1-1) in the 2026 World Cup, Morocco climbs to 6th in the world rankings, an absolute record for the national team. Algeria, crushed 3-0 by Argentina, drops out of Africa's top 5.
Morocco has reached a historic milestone in the FIFA rankings live from the 2026 World Cup: the Lions of the Atlas now occupy 6th place worldwide, their best ranking of all time.
Morocco’s rise is explained by Portugal’s stumble, held to a draw by DR Congo (1-1) in their opening match of the tournament. Mohamed Ouahbi’s side had already surpassed the Netherlands a few days earlier, notably thanks to Algeria’s victory over the Oranje (1-0) in a friendly match on June 3. Achraf Hakimi and his teammates are now drawing closer to the absolute African record, held by Nigeria, which reached 5th place worldwide in April 1994.
Morocco also retains its status as Africa’s number one. Senegal (16th), Nigeria (25th), Egypt (29th) and Ivory Coast (30th) complete the continental top 5, behind the Lions of the Atlas.
Conversely, Algeria is experiencing a significant decline. The Fennecs’ heavy defeat to Argentina (3-0), combined with Ivory Coast’s success against Ecuador (1-0), has sent Vladimir Petkovic’s side down to 31st place worldwide and sixth place in Africa, out of the continental top 5. To revive their campaign, the Greens will need to react decisively in their upcoming matches against Jordan and Austria.
