Morgan Cross's goal earns 10-woman Celtic a 1-0 Scottish Cup final win over Rangers
Morgan Cross scored the only goal of the game as Celtic held on with ten players to beat rivals Rangers 1-0 in the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park, ending an 11-game winless run against the Light Blues.
Morgan Cross scored a close-range finish in the 27th minute to give Celtic a 1-0 victory over Rangers in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park on Sunday, ending an 11-game wait for a win over their city rivals and denying the Light Blues a third successive title.
Cross’s goal came against the run of play. Rangers had been the dominant side in the opening stages, striking the outside of the post through Mia McAulay after just 11 minutes, but poor defending allowed Celtic to break the deadlock. Saoirse Noonan picked up possession and crossed to the back post, where Cross threw herself at the ball in front of Nicola Docherty to guide it in at the far post.
Celtic’s task grew considerably harder in the 58th minute when defender Emma Lawton was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Calliste Brookshire. Rangers, who had finished runners-up in the league under Leanne Crichton, piled forward in search of an equaliser but were repeatedly frustrated by goalkeeper Adelaide Gay and a resolute Celtic rearguard.
Gay was called into action on several occasions in the second half, smothering a drive from Laura Berry, saving a McAulay header, and punching a Brogan Hay cross against her own crossbar — only for the ball to be cleared to safety. Kim Shin-ji headed a Hay cross onto the top of the net as Rangers pressed, and a penalty appeal was waved away in added time when McAulay went down in the box.
Despite the sustained pressure, Grant Scott’s side held firm. The result ends Rangers’ two-year hold on the trophy and marks a significant moment for Celtic, who had gone 11 games without beating their rivals before Sunday’s final.
