England’s Michael Oliver will take charge of the 2026 World Cup Group F fixture between the Netherlands and Sweden, with Stuart Burt and James Mainwaring serving as his assistant referees. South Africa’s Abongile Tom is the fourth official, with compatriot Zakhele Siwela as reserve assistant referee.

The appointment places one of Europe’s most recognisable officials at the centre of a pivotal group-stage encounter. Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands are searching for their first win of the tournament after a 2-2 stalemate with Japan in their opener, while Sweden arrive in confident form following a commanding 5-1 victory over Tunisia.

Oliver, 41, is best known for his work in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, where he regularly oversees high-stakes fixtures. He averages 3.4 bookings per game and awards a penalty roughly once every three to four matches, while a red card comes around once every seven Premier League games.

The Northumberland-born referee has previous World Cup experience, having officiated three matches at Qatar 2022 — most notably Croatia’s quarter-final victory over Brazil. At club level, he handled the dramatic 3-3 draw between Everton and Manchester City during last season’s Premier League title race, a match in which he later acknowledged an officiating error, as well as Bayern Munich’s 2-1 Champions League knockout win at Real Madrid.

A Dutch win tonight would lift the Netherlands above Sweden into first place in Group F on four points, adding considerable weight to Oliver’s assignment.
