Michael Oliver ruled out of World Cup debut match with minor injury as Letexier steps in
Premier League referee Michael Oliver has been withdrawn from Ecuador vs Ivory Coast at World Cup 2026 due to a minor injury. FIFA confirmed Frenchman François Letexier will take his place, with Oliver expected to return for the next round of group matches.
Premier League referee Michael Oliver has been forced out of his opening World Cup 2026 assignment after picking up a minor injury, with FIFA confirming the change ahead of the Group E clash between Ecuador and Ivory Coast in Philadelphia.
A FIFA statement read: “Due to a minor injury, referee Michael Oliver (ENG) has been replaced by François Letexier (FRA). Oliver is expected to be available for selection again in the coming days.”
Oliver’s withdrawal also ruled out his fellow UK officials Stuart Burt and James Mainwaring, who had been appointed as his assistant referees. FIFA named Cyril Mugnier and Mehdi Rahmouni as replacements alongside the experienced Letexier, who steps in at short notice.
The Geordie official is one of the most decorated referees in European football, having taken charge of matches at the Champions League, World Cup 2022, and Euro 2024. He has held international referee status since 2012 and has been part of UEFA’s Elite Group since 2018.
Oliver spoke ahead of Euro 2024 about the unique demands of officiating at major tournaments. “The eyes of the world are on this tournament,” he said. “You get a sense when you arrive at the stadium that the atmosphere is different. The pressure, the competition, and the quality of matches are all higher.”
He also pushed back on the perception that referees have an easy schedule at major events. “There’s a perception that we turn up five minutes before kick-off, leave straight after, and don’t think about football for a week. But we put so much training and work into it, to be the best, to limit mistakes. Nobody needs to tell me after a game how well I’ve done — or not. I know that more than anybody.”
FIFA indicated Oliver is expected to be available again for the next round of group-stage matches, meaning his World Cup 2026 involvement is delayed rather than ended.
