Mexico vs Ecuador World Cup clash delayed by storms after fans target Ecuador hotel
Mexico and Ecuador's Round of 32 World Cup fixture at the Estadio Azteca has been pushed back from its 9pm local kick-off after thunderstorms struck Mexico City, compounding a night that saw Mexican fans set off fireworks and blast car horns outside the Ecuador squad's hotel.
Mexico and Ecuador’s 2026 World Cup Round of 32 tie at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City has been delayed past its scheduled 9pm local kick-off, with a severe thunderstorm raging above the stadium and lightning detected within the surrounding area.
FIFA’s protocols require a match to be halted — or postponed — whenever lightning is recorded within an eight-mile (13 km) radius of the venue. Play can only resume after a full 30 minutes have elapsed without a further strike, with any new lightning event resetting that countdown. According to The Guardian, a storm had been raging above the stadium for more than an hour before the scheduled start, with rolling thunder drawing audible gasps from the crowd already inside. Players had not yet emerged from the dressing rooms to warm up as of 40 minutes before kick-off.
The weather disruption follows a separate controversy involving Ecuador’s pre-match preparations. The Ecuadorian federation lodged a formal complaint with FIFA after Mexican supporters gathered outside the Ecuador squad’s hotel overnight, setting off fireworks and sounding car horns in what Ecuador described to the governing body as deliberate ‘sleep deprivation tactics’.
The stakes for both sides are considerable. Mexico are playing on home soil — the Azteca is one of football’s most storied venues — and will be desperate to advance in front of their own supporters. For Ecuador, reaching the last 16 would represent only the second time in the country’s history they have progressed beyond the group stage at a World Cup.
No revised kick-off time had been confirmed at the point of the delay, with FIFA yet to issue an official update on when the fixture would begin.
