Tuchel warns England fans to expect a grind against DR Congo in World Cup last 16
Thomas Tuchel has tempered expectations ahead of England's World Cup last-16 tie with DR Congo, cautioning supporters not to expect "sexy football" while insisting his side have the mentality to grind out the result.
Thomas Tuchel has urged England fans to reset their expectations before the side’s World Cup last-16 clash with DR Congo, warning that knockout football at this stage is rarely pretty — and that patience will be as important as quality.
Speaking ahead of the tie, Tuchel drew on his experience of deep cup runs across club football to frame what supporters should anticipate. “The first rounds of FA Cups and the rounds of 32s and in Carabao Cup, they’re not sexy. They’re not glamorous. You need to overcome them, and later it becomes glamorous, it becomes a big event,” he said.
England enter the match as heavy favourites, but Tuchel was candid about the challenge DR Congo will pose. He described them as “a copy of Ghana, a copy of Panama — a proud team, a defensive team, a committed team to defending, a quick team, happy to counter attack.” His message to supporters was direct: “We have more of the same to come so we need to get our expectations right.”
The England head coach, who carries a 74 per cent win rate in knockout football, acknowledged that breaking down a disciplined defensive block can become mentally draining. “It can be tiring, it can be a bit nerve-wracking. It can be monotonous,” he admitted, before stressing that the key is refusing to let frustration creep in. “We don’t freak out. We don’t start to doubt, we keep believing.”
Tuchel, who won the Champions League with Chelsea and reached the latter stages of that competition with Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, said there is no secret formula for knockout success — only clarity of focus. “We give them a headline. What to focus on, what are the key messages,” he explained.
With 90 minutes — and potentially 120 — to find a winner, Tuchel insisted the opportunity is firmly in England’s hands. “We have a lot of chances to win this match and this is where the focus is.”
England’s status as favourites brings its own pressure, and Tuchel acknowledged the lack of margin for error that comes with expectation. “Everyone of you expects us to win, every one of the fans expects us to win, so we’re just matching at the moment our own expectations. There is not a lot of gain, there’s not a lot of praise.”
Despite the measured tone, Tuchel was clear that he thrives in these moments. “I just love it. It just gives an extra edge,” he said — a reminder that, whatever the aesthetic, he intends to come through it.
