Mexico have become the first team to advance from the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage, winning Group A after victories over South Africa and South Korea. The hosts still face Czechia in their final group game on June 24.
Mexico have clinched a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout round, becoming the first side to advance from the group stage after consecutive wins over South Africa and South Korea in Group A.
The hosts opened their campaign with a 2-0 victory over South Africa on June 11, then followed it up with a 1-0 win over South Korea on June 18 to seal their progress with a game to spare. Mexico will complete their group stage schedule against Czechia on June 24 at Mexico City Stadium.
As Group A winners, Mexico will face a third-place finisher from Group C, E, F, H, or I in the Round of 32 on June 30 — though the precise opponent will not be confirmed until the remainder of the group stage concludes.
The 2026 World Cup is the first edition to feature a 48-team field, expanding the group stage to 12 groups of four. The top two sides from each group, along with the eight best third-place finishers, advance to a Round of 32 before the traditional knockout format takes over. The tournament’s knockout phase begins on June 28, with the final scheduled for July 19.
Mexico are one of three host nations at this edition of the World Cup, alongside the United States and Canada, and have now justified their status as automatic qualifiers with a composed and efficient start to the competition.
