Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick against Algeria (3-0) in Argentina’s opening match of the 2026 World Cup, in the night of Tuesday to Wednesday in Kansas City. At 38 years old, the Inter Miami forward has now brought his World Cup total to 16 goals, equalling Germany’s Miroslav Klose at the top of the competition’s all-time goalscorers ranking.
Asked to comment on France Info, former France left-back Bixente Lizarazu admitted he was not immune to surprise. “We are always amazed, yes, because he is 38 years old. But for me, he is the player who has given me the most pleasure over the last twenty years,” said the 1998 World Cup winner.
Lizarazu emphasised the Argentine’s exceptional longevity: “What is fantastic is to last. At 38 years old, to still be there at the World Cup and to equal Miroslav Klose’s record… He is one of the mythical players in football history. Personally, he is my favourite player over the last twenty years.”
Argentina, which is starting the competition as a strong favourite, will face Austria on Monday for their second group match, before taking on Jordan on Sunday, June 28.
