Messi targets 2026 World Cup semifinal as retirement question hangs over Argentina icon
Lionel Messi has scored eight goals in six matches at the 2026 World Cup — level with Kylian Mbappé for the tournament lead — as Argentina prepare to face England in the semifinal. The 39-year-old has declined to set a firm retirement date, saying he will play as long as he can contribute.
Lionel Messi arrives at the 2026 World Cup semifinal against England in Atlanta on Wednesday carrying eight goals and two assists from six matches — tied with Kylian Mbappé for the most goals in the tournament — and a question that has followed him all summer: is this his last dance on the international stage?
The 39-year-old has not closed the door on continuing beyond 2026. Speaking in June, Messi said he would keep playing until he “can’t anymore,” and when pressed specifically on the 2030 World Cup, he indicated he would compete “as long as he can contribute, feel good physically and help his teammates.” Those are not the words of a man announcing a farewell, but they are not a commitment to carry on either.
What is beyond dispute is the quality Messi has produced in the United States this summer. He scored a hat-trick in Argentina’s 2026 World Cup win over Algeria on June 16 and added a brace against Austria on June 22, finding the net in five of the team’s six games. Across all six World Cups he has represented Argentina — 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026 — he has now accumulated 21 goals and eight assists, a record compiled alongside only Cristiano Ronaldo among players to reach that six-tournament milestone.
Argentina enter the semifinal as defending World Cup champions, having lifted the trophy in Qatar in 2022, and as reigning Copa América champions following their 2024 title. The weight of expectation on Messi is familiar, but the context — potentially his penultimate match at a World Cup, against England in Atlanta — gives Wednesday’s fixture an added layer of significance.
At club level, Messi has spent the past four seasons with Inter Miami in MLS, averaging 24.5 goals and 13.5 assists per season between 2024 and 2025. He and Inter Miami claimed the 2025 MLS championship, and he had contributed 12 goals and seven assists in 14 league appearances before the current MLS season was paused for the World Cup.
Whether or not Wednesday proves to be a step toward a final chapter, Messi’s 2026 tournament form has already ensured that the conversation about his legacy — and his limits — will continue well beyond Atlanta.
