Mendez pinpoints Nurmagomedov's takedown error in shock KO loss to Song Yadong

Javier Mendez has identified the precise technical error that cost Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC Shanghai, explaining how a misaligned head position on a takedown attempt left his fighter wide open to Song Yadong’s finishing uppercut. The knockout marked Nurmagomedov’s first professional loss by stoppage and only his second defeat overall.

Mendez, who was absent from Nurmagomedov’s corner on the night, admitted the finish left him momentarily speechless. “When it happened, my mouth just dropped,” the American Kickboxing Academy head coach told Submission Radio. “I’m like, ‘What the hell happened?’ And I was in shock myself because I love him so much.”

Breaking down the sequence, Mendez was clear that the error was mechanical rather than a matter of being outclassed. “Song meant to throw that uppercut, Umar did the wrong thing when he went in for the takedown and moved his head off center, and it just caught him in the right spot in the equilibrium right back here,” he explained. “You get caught in the spot right there; it’s instant lights out.”

The defeat adds a second blemish to what had been a near-flawless professional record for the Dagestani bantamweight. His first loss came against Merab Dvalishvili in a closely contested bout that Mendez believes could easily have gone the other way. “The first time with Merab, which was a great fight, came down to the last round and Merab pulled it off by being more active,” Mendez said. “Umar didn’t quite do what he needed to do.”

Despite the back-to-back setbacks, Mendez has not wavered in his belief that Nurmagomedov has the tools to eventually reach the top of the UFC’s bantamweight division. “In my heart, I believe 100% [that Nurmagomedov can become champion],” he said, framing both losses as correctable rather than indicative of a ceiling.

For Nurmagomedov, the road back to a title shot will require rebuilding momentum in a stacked 135-pound division, but his coach’s diagnosis at least offers a clear technical starting point for what went wrong in Shanghai.
