McTominay set to sign new Napoli contract despite Conte's 'poison' warning on exit
Scott McTominay is closing in on a new contract at Napoli after the club rejected multiple Premier League and Saudi Pro League approaches this summer. The 29-year-old finished the Serie A season with 10 goals as Napoli ended second behind champions Inter Milan.
Scott McTominay is on course to extend his stay at Napoli this summer, with the Italian club having already turned down at least two Premier League offers and one approach from the Saudi Pro League for the 29-year-old Scotland midfielder, according to reports.
The news comes despite significant upheaval at Napoli following the departure of head coach Antonio Conte, who confirmed he was leaving the club after a 1-0 win over Udinese on the final day of the Serie A season — a result that sealed second place behind champions Inter Milan.
Conte used his post-match press conference, held alongside club owner Aurelio De Laurentiis, to deliver a pointed farewell. “I’ve seen a lot of poison and those who spread it are failures,” he told reporters. “Napoli doesn’t need failures, those who need a like. It needs serious people who want to love the team, just like the fan who pays for the ticket — instead these people should stay away because they are harmful.” Conte also accepted personal responsibility for failing to build the internal cohesion he had targeted, and pushed back on De Laurentiis’s suggestion that injuries alone had cost Napoli the title.
McTominay, who joined from Manchester United in the summer of 2024, contributed 10 Serie A goals this season, finishing second in Napoli’s internal scoring charts behind fellow former United loanee Rasmus Hojlund, who bagged 12 and whose temporary deal has already been made permanent. Together the pair recorded 30 goal involvements in the league.
Napoli’s decision to block McTominay’s exit reflects how central he has become to the club’s plans, even as they prepare for life under a new manager. The transfer window has not yet officially opened, but Tuttosport has reported that an agreement on a new deal is nearing.
The internal discord Conte described — and the 31-goal gap between Napoli and Inter in Serie A this season — underlines the scale of the rebuild ahead. Romelu Lukaku, another ex-United forward, was effectively frozen out by Conte for the entirety of the campaign following a reported falling-out, a situation that further limited Napoli’s attacking options. Whether the new coaching staff can resolve those tensions will shape how competitive Napoli are next season — and how much McTominay’s renewed commitment is worth.
