McTominay plasters Hojlund's locker with Scotland photos as United confirm £31m sale
Scott McTominay revealed he and Billy Gilmour covered Rasmus Hojlund's Napoli locker with pictures from Scotland's World Cup-qualifying win over Denmark. Manchester United have separately confirmed they received £31.4m from Napoli for Hojlund's permanent transfer.
Scott McTominay marked Scotland’s World Cup qualification at Denmark’s expense with a pointed locker-room prank on his Napoli team-mate Rasmus Hojlund, plastering the Danish striker’s locker with photographs from the Hampden Park victory. The gesture came after McTominay scored a sensational overhead kick in the win that sent Scotland to the tournament, and was carried out alongside fellow Napoli and Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour.
Speaking to GQ, McTominay described the close bond he shares with Hojlund despite the international rivalry. “I know Rasmus extremely well. He’s such a great kid, and we have so many good jokes and stuff at the training ground. But he can’t watch the overhead kick anymore,” he said. When asked whether he had simply sent Hojlund a GIF of the goal, McTominay replied: “Oh, that’s light. We stuck every picture from that game up on his locker, me and Billy.”
Gilmour missed the win over Denmark through injury and has since been ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a knee problem. McTominay, by contrast, will be part of the Scotland squad heading to the United States.
Hojlund’s absence from the tournament is not the only significant development for the 22-year-old this summer. Manchester United confirmed in their latest financial results that they received £31.4 million from Napoli for the striker’s permanent transfer, which was completed in late May. A buy-option clause embedded in his original loan agreement was triggered after Napoli secured Champions League qualification.
United themselves are returning to the Champions League after finishing third in the Premier League under interim head coach Michael Carrick. Transfer activity is already under way, with goalkeeper Ederson set to join from Atalanta in a deal worth £38 million. The club are also pursuing midfield reinforcements to replace Casemiro, with Mateus Fernandes, Adam Wharton, Sandro Tonali, and Carlos Baleba among the names linked.
