Mbappé reveals his two captain role models with France ahead of World Cup
Nine days before France's World Cup opener against Senegal, Kylian Mbappé has shared his captaincy references: Hugo Lloris, his only predecessor in the national team, and Zinédine Zidane during the 2006 World Cup.
Kylian Mbappé cited Hugo Lloris and Zinédine Zidane as his two captain role models with France, nine days before the French team’s World Cup opener against Senegal.
In an interview with Sorare’s YouTube channel, the Real Madrid forward detailed his references. “As a player, my role model was Hugo Lloris because he’s the only captain I had. As a kid, Zidane at the 2006 World Cup,” he told Nico Colombien.
Mbappé was appointed France captain by Didier Deschamps on March 21, 2023, following the international retirements of Hugo Lloris and Raphaël Varane. Antoine Griezmann was also considered for the role at the time. Since his appointment, the player developed at AS Monaco has worn the armband in virtually all his appearances with France, over 30 matches.
“It’s an honour to be able to wear the captain’s armband for your country,” Mbappé continued. “It’s allowed me to learn, to develop a new skill set and to take another step forward with the national team.”
A central figure in the French squad, Mbappé will be one of the most scrutinised players in the tournament. France begins its World Cup campaign against Senegal in nine days.
