Mbappe rejects Messi talent vs Ronaldo hard work narrative ahead of World Cup
Kylian Mbappe has pushed back on the idea that Lionel Messi succeeds on talent alone while Cristiano Ronaldo relies purely on hard work, calling it a view only someone who has never played football could hold.
Kylian Mbappe has dismissed one of football’s most persistent clichés — that Lionel Messi is all natural talent while Cristiano Ronaldo is all hard work — insisting the framing is an insult to both players. The Real Madrid forward made the comments in an interview with Sorare ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America.
“Without sounding condescending, that is something only someone who hasn’t played soccer would say,” Mbappe said. “Because if you tell me Ronaldo lacks talent or Messi hasn’t put in the work, it means you’ve never in your life laced up your boots to train day in and day out. I can’t fathom lacing up your boots every day and still thinking that way. I’m speaking from the heart.”
The 27-year-old, who has faced both players during his career, declined to pick a favourite between the two, instead choosing to highlight how their differences are physical and stylistic rather than a matter of effort versus ability. “One is right-footed, the other left-footed. One is tall, the other shorter. One is stronger, the other leaner. One has better finishing, the other more vision,” he added.
Messi’s game has long been defined by his low centre of gravity, close control, and football intelligence, but the statistics also underline a relentless output: 910 goals and 414 assists across his senior career. Ronaldo, who made his senior debut in 2002, has evolved from a trick-heavy winger into one of the most prolific goalscorers in history, with 973 goals to his name.
Mbappe is not the only high-profile voice to weigh in on the debate this week. Angel Di Maria, Messi’s long-time Argentina teammate, offered a more partial verdict on Friday. “For me, Leo is better than Cristiano because he has a natural talent; he doesn’t have to work constantly to match or equal someone else,” the former Real Madrid winger said — precisely the kind of framing Mbappe had rejected.
