Kylian Mbappé missed France’s training session at Clairefontaine on Tuesday after coming down with flu, the French Football Federation confirmed, casting a doubt over his availability for the team’s upcoming Nations League fixtures.

The squad has gathered at the national training centre on the outskirts of Paris ahead of a demanding run of four matches in less than two weeks. France travel to Turkey on Friday before facing Belgium away next Monday, then host Italy on 2 October and Belgium again on 5 October.

Mbappé, who captains the side under new head coach Zinédine Zidane, remains the focal point of the French attack. The Real Madrid forward made history this summer when he surpassed Lionel Messi’s long-standing record to become the all-time leading scorer at FIFA World Cups, netting his 22nd goal in the tournament.

The 2018 World Cup winner’s fitness will be closely monitored in the coming days, with France’s coaching staff keen to have their captain available for the trip to Istanbul. No further details on the severity of his illness or a projected return to training were provided by the federation.
