Lewis Hall signs Newcastle extension and reveals Man United interest never unsettled him

Lewis Hall has signed a contract extension with Newcastle United until 2031 and revealed that Manchester United’s summer interest in him never became a distraction, insisting the speculation was simply a reflection of his own performances.

The left-back was identified as a key transfer target by United during the window, but Newcastle refused to sell after already parting with Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães. Hall subsequently ended the uncertainty by putting pen to paper on a new long-term deal at St James’ Park earlier this month.

“No, honestly, it didn’t [affect me],” Hall said when asked about the transfer speculation. “I guess whenever you’re linked to another team, you know that you’re doing something right. I guess it’s just a credit to your own performances and how you are as a player, how you are as a person.”

Hall pointed to the arrival of head coach Matthias Jaissle as the central reason behind his commitment to the club. “I knew how much I love playing here and I knew that since the manager came in, I knew the ambitions and what we wanted to achieve,” he said. “After not many conversations, not many training sessions, I knew that the manager was going to be really good for this club… as soon as we did that, it was a no-brainer really to sign.”

The 21-year-old has backed up that decision with strong early-season form, scoring in Newcastle’s 2-1 win over Hull City last weekend and earning a recall to the England squad. His campaign has not been without difficulty — he conceded a stoppage-time penalty against Liverpool — but he has largely been one of Newcastle’s standout performers as Jaissle integrates a number of new summer recruits.

Hall had reportedly grown frustrated under predecessor Eddie Howe after being deployed on the right rather than in his natural left-back role, a factor said to have contributed to a dip in form that cost him a place in England’s summer World Cup squad.

At Old Trafford, the left-back position remains a concern. Luke Shaw is the only natural senior option but has been managing an injury, with winger Patrick Dorgu filling in. Shaw returned to the starting line-up for United’s draw with Fulham at the weekend before being replaced by Dorgu in the second half.
