Mbappé absent from training, his status uncertain for Zidane's France debut in Turkey

Kylian Mbappé missed the collective training session on Tuesday at Clairefontaine, suffering from flu-like symptoms that cast doubt on his participation in the opening match of Zinédine Zidane’s tenure as France head coach. Les Bleus face Turkey on Friday evening in Izmit in the Nations League.

While 22 players were present on the fields of the national complex, the France captain — with 106 caps and 66 goals to his name — remained at the château. His flu-like condition could prompt Zidane to exercise caution and keep him on the bench for his official debut.

This autumn gathering spans four matches: besides Turkey, Les Bleus will also face Italy and Belgium, twice each. It is in this demanding context that Zidane begins his tenure as national team manager.

On the tactical front, the new France coaching staff is considering a 4-3-3 built around three defensively-minded midfielders. However, Warren Zaïre-Emery’s absence reshuffles the deck: Rayan Cherki is expected to complete a starting midfield alongside Manu Koné and Adrien Rabiot.

Up front, if Mbappé is fit, the trio of Mbappé-Dembélé-Olise seems most likely. But the uncertainty surrounding the captain adds an extra dimension to Zidane’s debut: the question is no longer just what system the new manager will impose, but also with what weapons he will apply it from Friday onwards.
