Mbappé equals Giroud and becomes France's joint all-time leading scorer
With a well-placed finish from Michael Olise's assist in the 66th minute, Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring for France against Senegal in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup, bringing his tally to 57 goals for the national team — level with Olivier Giroud.
Kylian Mbappé equalled Olivier Giroud’s record and reached the top of France’s all-time goalscoring chart on Tuesday evening as the Bleus began their 2026 World Cup campaign against Senegal.
Picked out in depth by Michael Olise, the French captain beat Edouard Mendy with a well-placed finish in the 66th minute to open the scoring. This goal, Mbappé’s 57th in the French shirt, allows him to join Giroud at the top of a ranking that the former Chelsea and AC Milan striker had held alone since November 2022.
The Real Madrid forward needed just one goal to close the gap. He scored it in a match of the highest stakes, on the opening day of a World Cup that France approach among the favourites. Deschamps thus had a decisive Mbappé at a moment when the Bleus were seeking to break the deadlock against an organised Senegal side.
