Kylian Mbappé sparked controversy during France’s match against Iraq in Philadelphia by confronting the groundstaff responsible for clearing water from the pitch during the longest halftime interruption in World Cup history — over two hours, caused by thunderstorms and torrential rain.

Upon returning from the dressing room, the France captain appeared visibly frustrated and took issue with the technicians, criticizing them for concentrating their efforts on France’s defensive half of the pitch rather than the waterlogged attacking zone. The footage, captured by cameras, quickly circulated on social media, where some users described his attitude as that of a “dictator,” a “shameful” posture, or “disdainful” behavior.

Mbappé sought to clarify matters after the match. “It wasn’t frustration,” he insisted. “It’s just that the part where we attack was waterlogged but they spent 20 minutes cleaning the part where we defend and not the other. It was a disadvantage, and I wanted them to spend the same time cleaning both halves of the pitch. But it wasn’t their fault — they were told to go there and the other group wasn’t ready.”

The striker also acknowledged some frustration over the pitch management beforehand: “Waiting two hours and seeing they hadn’t protected the pitch when they should have covered it, that gets to you a bit. But it passes.”

On the pitch, Mbappé opened the scoring shortly after the quarter-hour mark before adding a second goal shortly after the restart, from an Ousmane Dembélé assist, allowing France to win despite the difficult conditions.
