Crystal Palace lifted the UEFA Conference League trophy in Leipzig on Wednesday, defeating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 to claim the club’s first European honour and secure a place in next season’s Europa League. Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the only goal of the final, converting the rebound after Adam Wharton’s effort was parried by Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla.

The victory completes a remarkable chapter under Oliver Glasner, who is leaving the south London club having guided them to an FA Cup triumph, a Community Shield, and now a European title — the most successful period in Crystal Palace’s history.

Mateta’s path to the winning goal carried its own narrative weight. The France forward came close to leaving Palace in January, only staying after a knee problem blocked his medical clearance for a proposed move to AC Milan — a situation that left some supporters frustrated. He had publicly vowed to give everything to Glasner and his team-mates, and delivered on that promise emphatically, celebrating with his signature corner-flag kick in front of a euphoric Palace end.

Adam Wharton’s fitness had been a concern in the build-up to the final, but Glasner confirmed he would only field players who were fully fit, and the midfielder started, while Chris Richards was named among the substitutes.

The atmosphere inside the RB Arena was electric from the outset. Around 13,000 Palace supporters in their allocated section, joined by thousands more in general admission, raised a banner quoting Shakespeare’s Henry V — “this story shall the good man teach his son” — alongside a tifo depicting a fan at an airport departures board reading: “Liquidation cancelled, FA Cup landed, Europa League boarding.” Many had arrived via a fan march through Leipzig’s city centre, while more than 10,000 supporters who could not make the trip gathered at Selhurst Park to watch together.

Rayo Vallecano were not without their moments. A Florian Lejeune tackle halted an early Ismaila Sarr run, Dean Henderson was called upon to deal with two crosses, and Brazilian forward Alemao struck a volley just past the right post before the half-hour. The match was briefly halted in the 38th minute due to a medical emergency in the stands. Tyrick Mitchell then headed a free delivery from Wharton just wide in stoppage time, his frustration plain as he lay in front of goal.

Mateta’s second-half intervention ultimately settled the contest, capping a night that Palace supporters and Glasner alike will not forget.
