Marsch walks away from Lopetegui after Canada's historic 6-0 rout of Qatar
Jesse Marsch refused to discuss Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui after a full-time altercation at the World Cup, as Canada secured their first-ever Finals victory with a 6-0 win — a result overshadowed by a serious leg injury to Ismael Kone.
Jesse Marsch’s Canada side recorded a landmark 6-0 victory over Qatar in their Group B fixture at the 2026 World Cup, but the occasion was clouded by a serious injury to midfielder Ismael Kone and a heated touchline confrontation between the two head coaches at full-time.
Kone, who plays his club football for Sassuolo, suffered a suspected leg break in the second half after a challenge from Qatar’s Assim Madibo. The tackle was initially punished with a yellow card before VAR intervened and upgraded it to a red, reducing Qatar to nine men — Homam Elamin having already been dismissed earlier in the match. Canada players formed a protective huddle around Kone as he received treatment on the pitch, and members of both teams’ backroom staff had to be separated as tensions rose.
At the final whistle, Marsch and Qatar head coach Julen Lopetegui became embroiled in a prolonged exchange. Marsch, visibly frustrated, thrust his arms into the air and walked away from the Spaniard. In the post-match press conference, the Canada manager declined to elaborate on the confrontation directly.
“I’m not wasting a single second talking about that,” Marsch told reporters, describing the Qatar bench’s attempts to argue against Madibo’s dismissal as “strange behaviour.” He also revealed that Madibo had personally visited the Canada dressing room to apologise to Kone. “The player apologised to Ismael. He came into the dressing room. The team let him know that happened,” Marsch said.
Marsch and several of Kone’s teammates subsequently visited the 24-year-old at a Vancouver hospital ahead of his surgery.
Despite the turbulence, Canada’s position in the tournament looks secure. The four points gathered from their opening two Group B matches put them in strong contention to advance to the Round of 32. They conclude their group stage campaign against Switzerland on Wednesday, 24 June.
