Marsch pays tribute to Kone after Canada midfielder suffers suspected broken leg against Qatar
Canada head coach Jesse Marsch has spoken emotionally about Ismael Kone after the midfielder appeared to break his leg during Canada's win over Qatar at the 2026 World Cup, with Marsch describing the injury as a huge loss for the squad.
Jesse Marsch delivered an emotional tribute to Ismael Kone after the Canada midfielder appeared to suffer a broken leg during his country’s second group-stage match against Qatar at the 2026 World Cup, with the injury seemingly ending Kone’s tournament.
Marsch did not shy away from the severity of the blow to his squad, calling Kone’s absence a significant setback while expressing full confidence in the player’s long-term future.
“Ismael is such a great kid,” Marsch said. “He’s so imperfect but that’s why you love him. He can do great things and the next moment he loses concentration. He embodies a lot of what the team is. It’s a huge loss for us. He’ll be fine, we’ll get him good doctors. He’s got a big future and he’s a big part of everything we’ll do.”
Canada claimed an impressive result against Qatar despite losing Kone to the injury, and Marsch used his post-match comments to highlight the character of his wider group in responding to the distressing incident on the pitch.
“I’ve said all along the best resource of this programme is the players,” Marsch added. “They are incredibly kind and generous but they’re also great players and competitors.”
Kone, who plays his club football in Europe, had been an important figure in Canada’s midfield heading into the tournament. His apparent leg break represents one of the more serious injuries of the competition so far, and the full extent of the damage is expected to be confirmed following medical assessment.
