Mark Bosnich ruptures quadricep saving penalty at World Cup promotional event
Former Manchester United and Australia goalkeeper Mark Bosnich, 54, will require surgery after rupturing his quadricep while saving a penalty during a celebrity shootout ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Mark Bosnich will need surgery on a ruptured quadricep after the former Manchester United goalkeeper was injured saving a penalty at a celebrity shootout staged as a promotional event ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America.
Bosnich, 54, was in goal facing a penalty from former AFL chief Gillon McLachlan when he made the save but immediately cried out in pain and fell to the floor. Some onlookers initially suspected a prank. Event presenter and former Australia international Archie Thompson said: “I hope it is a stitch up, but if it is, man, his acting is incredible.”
Bosnich was able to walk gingerly to the sidelines and had the injury iced at the venue before being taken to hospital. Photos from the event show him smiling while holding ice on the injured leg. He has since confirmed to Nine that surgery will be required.
The injury is a significant setback for Bosnich, who is scheduled to work as a pundit for Australia’s coverage of the World Cup. The Socceroos have been drawn in a group alongside Turkey, the United States, and Paraguay.
Bosnich spent the majority of his playing career in the Premier League. He first joined Manchester United from Sydney United as a teenager before returning to Old Trafford in 1999, remaining until 2001 and picking up a Premier League winners’ medal as part of the 1999/2000 title-winning squad. In between his two spells at United he spent several years at Aston Villa, and he later had a two-year stint at Chelsea from 2001 to 2003.
At international level, Bosnich earned 17 caps for Australia between 1993 and 2000, and memorably scored in a 13-0 World Cup qualification victory over the Solomon Islands in June 1997.
