Mark Bosnich faces surgery after rupturing quadricep at World Cup promotional event
Former Manchester United and Australia goalkeeper Mark Bosnich, 54, ruptured his quadricep while saving a penalty during a celebrity shootout ahead of the 2026 World Cup. He was taken to hospital and has confirmed surgery will be required.
Mark Bosnich is facing surgery after rupturing his quadricep while saving a penalty at a promotional event tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, just days before he was due to begin punditry duties for Australia’s coverage of the tournament. The 54-year-old former Manchester United and Australia goalkeeper was hospitalised following the injury, which occurred during a celebrity penalty shootout.
Bosnich was in goal when he faced a spot-kick from former AFL chief Gillon McLachlan. He made the save but immediately collapsed in agony, prompting some onlookers to wonder whether it was staged. Event presenter Archie Thompson remarked: “I hope it is a stitch up, but if it is, man, his acting is incredible.”
Bosnich managed to hobble to the sidelines under his own power and had the injury iced at the venue before being taken to hospital. Photographs from the scene show him smiling despite his discomfort, still holding ice against his leg. He has since confirmed to Channel Nine that an operation will be necessary.
The injury comes at a particularly unfortunate moment. Bosnich had been lined up as a pundit for Australia’s World Cup coverage this summer, with the Socceroos having qualified for the tournament in North America. Australia are drawn in a group alongside Turkey, the United States, and Paraguay.
Bosnich spent the bulk of his playing career in the Premier League. He first joined Manchester United from Sydney United as a youngster, making three appearances during that initial spell. After a stint at Aston Villa, he returned to Old Trafford in 1999 and remained until 2001, becoming part of the squad that won the Premier League title in the 1999/2000 season. He accumulated 38 appearances for United in total, keeping 15 clean sheets. A two-year spell at Chelsea followed between 2001 and 2003.
At international level, Bosnich earned 17 caps for Australia between 1993 and 2000, and memorably scored in a 13-0 World Cup qualification victory over the Solomon Islands in June 1997.
