Manchester United withdraw youth team from two cups to prioritise UEFA Youth League return
Manchester United have pulled their development side out of the EFL Trophy and National League Cup for 2026-27, with the club's Champions League qualification opening the door to UEFA Youth League participation and a sharper focus on individual player development.
Manchester United have withdrawn their youth team from both the EFL Trophy and the National League Cup ahead of the 2026-27 season, redirecting their development programme toward the UEFA Youth League following the senior side’s return to the Champions League.
The decision, confirmed by the Press Association, reflects a broader restructuring of United’s professional development phase — the group of players transitioning between the under-18s and under-21s. The club intends to operate with a smaller squad at that level next season, placing greater emphasis on individual development rather than volume of competitive fixtures.
The timing makes practical sense. Last season, the EFL Trophy and National League Cup accounted for 10 matches in the first half of the campaign, yet United failed to progress beyond the group stage in either competition — finishing third in the EFL Trophy and exiting the National League Cup at the league stage. The UEFA Youth League, an under-19s competition, will guarantee at least eight fixtures as a minimum, offering comparable game time against higher-profile European opposition.
United will continue to compete in the Premier League International Cup, having reached the quarter-finals last season before losing to Real Madrid. The club has indicated it will review the decision to opt out of the EFL Trophy and National League Cup ahead of the 2027-28 season.
On the senior side, the 2026-27 campaign promises to be considerably more demanding. United finished third in the Premier League under Michael Carrick — who took charge after Ruben Amorim’s departure — behind champions Arsenal and Manchester City, and will now face a significantly busier schedule with European football restored. Last season they were eliminated from both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup at the earliest possible stages, losing to League Two side Grimsby in the former and to Brighton in the latter.
United are yet to complete any summer signings, though they are understood to be close to agreeing a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson. The club has also been linked with West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville following the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League.
