Manchester United will not compete in the EFL Trophy or the National League Cup this season after academy chiefs decided the existing fixtures schedule had become too congested to allow adequate individual development time for their top young players.

The decision was driven in part by United’s return to the UEFA Youth League, which they re-enter this season after the first team secured Champions League football. With the club’s Professional Development Phase (PDP) group already eligible for Premier League 2, the Premier League International Cup, the U-18 Premier League, and the FA Youth Cup, officials felt the overall programme risked tipping the balance too far toward matches and away from training.

United have entered the EFL Trophy every season since 2019/20, reaching the last 16 in 2022/23 — their best run in the competition. Last season their youngsters defeated Notts County but were eliminated at the group stage following losses to Barnsley and Lincoln City. The National League Cup, which pits academy sides against National League first-team squads, was entered for the first time last season.

Despite withdrawing from both competitions, the club has chosen to remain in the Premier League International Cup, citing the variety of opposition it provides. Academy bosses pointed specifically to last season’s fixture against Real Madrid at Old Trafford as an example of the high-quality tests the competition can offer.

The restructured programme also reflects a shift in how United plan to manage their Under-21 squad. Sources at Old Trafford say the group will be smaller this season, with the club becoming more selective in its recruitment of young players. The freed-up time is intended to allow the most promising talents to train regularly with the first team rather than remaining tied to a heavy Under-21 schedule.

United officials stressed they remain supportive of both the EFL Trophy and the National League Cup and acknowledged that their young players benefited from participating in them. The club intends to review its games programme ahead of the 2027/28 season and has not ruled out re-entering either competition at that point.
