Manchester United weigh up free transfer for Darlow as Onana future remains uncertain
Manchester United are exploring a free transfer for Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow this summer as they look to reshape their goalkeeping department, with doubts also lingering over André Onana's long-term future at Old Trafford.
Manchester United are considering a move for Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow as part of a broader overhaul of their goalkeeping department ahead of the summer transfer window. The 35-year-old is out of contract at Elland Road at the end of the month and would be available on a free transfer, though Leeds are reportedly keen to offer him a new deal to keep him at the club.
United have also held discussions over a move for Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who came through the youth academy at Old Trafford before leaving in 2018. The 33-year-old never made a senior first-team appearance for the club but has since built a solid career in the Premier League.
The search for back-up options comes despite United having just extended the contract of veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton for a further season. The 40-year-old had been expected to leave this summer, but the club moved to retain him given the role he plays within the squad. Heaton has made just three first-team appearances since joining in 2021, yet is widely regarded as a vital presence in training and in the dressing room.
Casemiro, who is set to leave United when his own contract expires this summer, previously spoke warmly of Heaton’s influence. “He is very important. Very important for us,” the Brazilian said. “He pushes the training, he pushes in the game — of course he doesn’t play, but he pushes every time. For me, everyone needs this guy; he helps the room so much.”
Beyond the back-up position, United face bigger decisions further up the goalkeeping pecking order. Altay Bayindir is expected to depart, while the future of André Onana remains unclear. The Cameroonian spent last season on loan in Türkiye, and United are reportedly looking to sell him. However, Onana is said to want to remain at the club and compete with Senne Lammens for the number-one shirt.
