Manchester United are preparing to battle Arsenal for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes this summer, with the Hammers setting an £80 million asking price despite their relegation to the Championship.

Fernandes, 21, impressed again in the Premier League this season even as West Ham dropped to the second tier for the second consecutive year following his move from Southampton last summer. The Times reports that United have identified the versatile Portuguese midfielder as a priority target in the middle of the park, with Arsenal also holding a firm interest. However, it is understood Fernandes himself favours a move to Old Trafford.

The pursuit of Fernandes is part of a broader recruitment drive under manager Michael Carrick, who guided United to a top-four finish in the second half of the season to secure Champions League football. With European competition returning to Old Trafford, Carrick’s squad will require significant reinforcement across multiple positions.

Defence is another area of focus, particularly at left-back. Luke Shaw started all 38 Premier League games this season — a remarkable return given his injury history — but with Tyrell Malacia released and Patrick Dorgu now viewed as an option further forward, United are in the market for cover and competition on that flank.

According to The Athletic, Newcastle’s Lewis Hall has emerged as one of the options being considered. The 21-year-old, a product of Chelsea’s academy, has established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading left-backs during his time at St James’ Park and is contracted to Newcastle until 2029. That security of tenure means any deal is expected to cost at least £50 million.

Hall’s omission from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup — with Djed Spence selected ahead of him as back-up to Nico O’Reilly — raised eyebrows given his club form, but it has done little to dampen United’s reported interest.

With midfield and defensive additions both being actively explored, United’s summer business could carry a combined outlay well in excess of £100 million before the window is fully under way.
