Manchester United to sign Colombian teenager Cristian Orozco in July transfer
Manchester United will formally announce the signing of Colombian midfielder Cristian Orozco once he turns 18 on July 13, completing a deal agreed with Fortaleza CEIF last year. The teenager made four senior appearances in Colombia's top flight last season.
Manchester United are set to complete the signing of Colombian midfielder Cristian Orozco this month, with the 17-year-old’s registration confirmed once he turns 18 on July 13 under a deal agreed with Fortaleza CEIF last year.
Orozco will travel to Manchester ahead of that date to begin acclimatising, with United arranging English lessons to help him settle. The club will make a formal announcement once his move is finalised.
The signing follows a pattern United have established in recent years, recruiting high-potential teenagers from outside Europe as a response to post-Brexit rules that prevent them from signing players from EU academies. Sekou Kone, Diego Leon and Enzo Kana-Biyik all arrived through the same route last year — Kone from Mali, Leon from Paraguay and Kana-Biyik from France via Le Havre’s academy.
Kone and Leon spent their first season with United’s under-21 side, while Kana-Biyik, who already had European football experience, was loaned immediately to Ineos-owned Lausanne Sport. None of the three have yet made a first-team debut at Old Trafford.
Orozco is expected to follow a similar path of gradual integration. Despite his age, he has already had a taste of senior football: the midfielder was included in 11 first-team squads for Fortaleza CEIF last season, making two substitute appearances and two starts in Colombia’s top flight.
United view the teenager as a player with genuine first-team potential in the longer term, while acknowledging that a period of adaptation will be needed as he adjusts to life in England. The club regards this type of recruitment — young, internationally sourced talent signed at low cost — as a low-risk, high-reward strategy as they continue to broaden their global scouting network.
