Fernandes, Martinez, Shaw and Bayindir enter final year of their Manchester United contracts
Bruno Fernandes, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Altay Bayindir have all entered the last 12 months of their Manchester United deals, with Shaw at particular risk of leaving on a free transfer next summer.
Bruno Fernandes, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Altay Bayindir have each entered the final year of their Manchester United contracts, raising the prospect of significant departures at Old Trafford next summer.
Shaw faces the most precarious situation of the four. United hold no option to extend his deal, meaning the left-back will be free to leave without a transfer fee when his contract expires unless the club agrees new terms. The 30-year-old is United’s longest-serving first-team player, having joined from Southampton in the summer of 2014 for £27 million under Louis van Gaal. Last season he became only the fifth outfield player in the club’s history to start all 38 Premier League games in a single campaign, joining Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister, Denis Irwin and Harry Maguire in that select group.
Fernandes, who broke the Premier League assist record last term, is in a different contractual position. United hold a 12-month extension option on the captain’s deal, and the club has communicated its desire for him to remain. No new long-term contract is currently planned, though that could be revisited during the 2026/27 season. Fernandes himself said in October that he would not discuss his future with his agent until after the World Cup.
Martinez also has a one-year extension clause in his contract that United can activate. The Argentine centre-back endured a disrupted campaign, missing the first three months with a knee injury before a calf problem sidelined him again between February and March. He was also suspended for three matches following an incident involving Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Martinez has since featured for Argentina at the World Cup, where the defending champions are among the favourites to retain the trophy.
Bayindir, by contrast, is expected to leave United before the transfer window closes. The goalkeeper, who did not make a single competitive appearance for the club last season, is seeking regular first-team football. His contract runs until 2027 and includes an extension option, but he is understood to be pushing for an exit. Bayindir was also unused by Turkey, who were eliminated in the World Cup group stage.
