Mbappé draws level with Messi as Mexico and Norway reach World Cup last 16
Kylian Mbappé scored twice against Sweden to match Lionel Messi's tournament tally of six goals, while Mexico's Raúl Jiménez and Norway's Erling Haaland also delivered on a packed Match Day 20 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Kylian Mbappé moved to six goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, scoring twice against Sweden to draw level with Lionel Messi’s all-time single-tournament record and close to within one of Messi’s overall World Cup tally of 19. Mexico and Norway also sealed their places in the round of 16 on the same evening, capping a memorable Match Day 20.
Mbappé, 27 and playing in his third World Cup, now sits one goal behind Messi’s all-time mark of 19. France’s captain has two matches at minimum remaining to surpass it.
At Mexico City Stadium, El Tri produced the night’s most atmospheric moment. Julián Quiñones opened the scoring with a sharp run and finish, before Raúl Jiménez collected a pass from Quiñones at the edge of the box and drove a precise strike into the top corner to send the home crowd into a frenzy.
Norway’s progression was built on familiar foundations. Antonio Nusa gave them the lead against Ivory Coast with a composed dribble past two defenders before curling a right-footed effort into the far post — the standout goal of the day. Erling Haaland then added his fifth goal of the tournament in three matches, tapping in a cross from Patrick Berg to put Norway in control. That sets up a round-of-16 tie against Brazil on Sunday.
Ivory Coast fought back through Diallo, whose equaliser capped a neat one-two with Nicolas Pépé down the right before he slid the ball into the far post. Diallo came close to a dramatic late leveller, but Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland produced a strong left-handed save in stoppage time to preserve the result and send Norway through.
