Marcus Rashford and Manchester United have reached a mutual understanding that a return to Old Trafford this summer is an option neither side is keen to pursue, according to reports from the Daily Mail. The winger’s loan spell at Barcelona ended without the £26m purchase option being triggered after the Spanish club signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle instead.

Rashford has been in form for England at World Cup 2026, scoring in their opening group-stage win against Croatia and impressing on the left flank, while Gordon has struggled to make an impact. New United manager Michael Carrick — who was briefly Rashford’s team-mate during his playing days at the club — is said to be open to reintegrating the forward, but both Rashford and United would prefer he secures a move elsewhere.

Rashford’s exile from the first team stemmed primarily from the tenures of Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim. Carrick’s appointment as permanent manager has at least opened a theoretical door, but the Daily Mail’s report makes clear that a return to Carrington is considered a fallback rather than a plan.

On the transfer front, United are reportedly preparing a significant shift in strategy. The Sun claims the club has grown wary of the inflated fees being demanded for established Premier League players. United had been linked with recently relegated West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes but balked at his £80m valuation — Tottenham subsequently agreed an £85m deal for the player.

Manchester City’s club-record £116m move for Elliot Anderson has further illustrated the scale of domestic inflation, prompting United to look toward younger, less expensive targets. Midfielders Alex Scott and Adam Wharton have both been mentioned as potential options, though each carries a reported price tag in the region of £80m — figures that appear to contradict the budget-conscious pivot United are said to be planning.

One piece of inbound business is already confirmed: Brazilian midfielder Ederson is set to arrive this month following Casemiro’s departure, giving Carrick an early addition as he prepares for his first full season in charge, which will include Champions League football.
