Gilberto Mora announced himself on the world stage as Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0 in the World Cup round of 32 at the Azteca Stadium, with the 17-year-old becoming the second-youngest player ever to start a World Cup knockout game — just 20 days older than Pelé was when the Brazilian icon featured at the 1958 tournament.

Mora, who plays his club football for Liga MX side Tijuana, took the field at 17 years and 259 days old, adding another record to one he had already set earlier in the tournament. When he came off the bench in Mexico’s opening group win over South Africa, aged 17 years and 240 days, he became El Tri’s youngest-ever men’s World Cup player, surpassing a 96-year-old record held by Manuel “Chaquetas” Rosas since 1930.

The start against Ecuador was only Mora’s fifth in a Mexico shirt, and he had registered just one assist in prior appearances. But a 72-minute cameo against the Czech Republic was enough to convince manager Javier Aguirre to hand the teenager a place in the starting XI for a knockout tie — a bold call that nearly produced an immediate dividend.

Within the opening 16 minutes, Mora blasted one effort over from distance before curling a second agonisingly wide of the far post. While neither found the net, the composure and directness he showed underlined why he is regarded as Mexican football’s brightest emerging talent.

Mexico ultimately secured a comfortable 2-0 victory through a dominant team performance, but it was the teenage midfielder who captured the imagination. Widely considered one of world football’s hottest prospects, Mora’s World Cup is already historic — and it is far from over.
