Manchester United to net £10.5m from Greenwood's £33.3m Fenerbahce move after Getafe cut
Mason Greenwood has completed a £33.3m transfer from Marseille to Fenerbahce, triggering a 40% sell-on clause that will earn Manchester United roughly £10.5m — after 20% of their share is forwarded to Getafe.
Manchester United will receive approximately £10.5m from Mason Greenwood’s £33.3m transfer from Marseille to Fenerbahce, after a sell-on clause negotiated at the time of his original departure from Old Trafford comes into effect.
United included a 40% sell-on clause when Greenwood completed his £26.6m move to Marseille in 2024. With Marseille now selling the 24-year-old to Turkish club Fenerbahce, that clause generates around £13.3m for United — but not all of it stays at Old Trafford.
According to The Athletic, 20% of United’s share — roughly £2.7m — must be passed on to Getafe, the Spanish club where Greenwood spent the 2023/24 season on loan. That arrangement was part of the terms agreed when Greenwood joined Getafe following the dropping of charges against him — which had included attempted rape, assault and controlling behaviour — in January 2022. Greenwood denied all allegations.
The remaining £10.5m represents pure profit under the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), given that Greenwood was a product of United’s own academy. That provides a meaningful boost to manager Michael Carrick as he prepares the squad for Champions League football next season. United have already spent a combined £85m on Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans this window.
Greenwood’s form since leaving Manchester has been difficult to ignore. He scored 10 goals and registered six assists in 36 appearances during his loan spell at Getafe, convincing Marseille to make a permanent move the following summer. Over the past two seasons in Ligue 1, he has netted 48 times and contributed 17 assists across 81 appearances in all competitions.
Former Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi, now at Tottenham, was effusive in his praise of the forward late last year. “I don’t see any other players in Europe at the same level,” De Zerbi said. “He has the potential to win the Ballon d’Or. I would like him to be more consistent, but the qualities that nature has given him — I think he is worthy of the Ballon d’Or.”
