Manchester United believe they are in pole position to sign RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande this summer, according to German outlet BILD, with manager Michael Carrick identifying the 19-year-old as a priority target to strengthen his forward line.

Diomande emerged as one of the most coveted teenagers in European football after a standout 2025/26 season at Leipzig, scoring 13 goals and registering 10 assists in 36 appearances as the German club finished third in the Bundesliga and secured Champions League football. He then represented Ivory Coast at the World Cup, contributing one assist in four matches before his nation were eliminated in the Round of 32 by Norway.

United’s confidence comes despite significant competition. Liverpool, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain all consider themselves genuine contenders, and it was Liverpool who made the first concrete move — a bid of £68 million plus up to £17 million in add-ons that Leipzig rejected outright. While several clubs are reportedly preparing offers, none are said to be willing to exceed £85 million for the forward.

That figure falls well short of Leipzig’s valuation. The Bundesliga club are holding firm at £102 million and, with no suitor yet reaching that threshold, are confident of retaining Diomande. Leipzig are simultaneously pushing to extend his contract on improved terms, giving them additional leverage in any negotiations.

The situation leaves United’s optimism tempered by a significant financial gap. Carrick’s side would need to substantially increase their offer — or convince Leipzig to lower their demands — before a deal can progress. For now, the race for Diomande remains wide open, with the player’s club in the strongest position of all.
