Manchester United have signed goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a free transfer from Leeds United, strengthening their squad ahead of a return to the Champions League.

Darlow, 35, arrives having ended last season as Leeds’ first-choice goalkeeper after manager Daniel Farke lost patience with Lucas Perri. The Wales international played a pivotal role in Leeds surviving relegation, but departed Elland Road when the club could not guarantee him the starting position heading into the new campaign.

“Leeds offered him a contract — there were definitely contract talks, and they wanted to keep him,” Isaac Johnson, Leeds reporter at Leeds Live, told MEN Sport. “Farke indicated towards the end of the season that he ideally wanted to keep him on. However, they couldn’t guarantee him the number one spot. And so I think in his mind, it was a case of, well, do I play back-up at Leeds again, potentially? Or do I be the back-up at Man United where I’ve got better chances and better wages and all that? When Man United came calling and Leeds couldn’t offer him a spot, I think it was a pretty easy decision for him to make.”

Darlow will serve as backup to Senne Lammens, the Belgian goalkeeper who established himself as United’s first choice following his debut against Sunderland last October. Lammens joined from Royal Antwerp and was largely unchallenged last season, with United absent from European football and eliminated early from the domestic cups. The club’s return to the Champions League under Ruben Amorim made reinforcing the position a priority.

The need for change in United’s goalkeeping department predates Amorim’s arrival. His predecessor Erik ten Hag signed André Onana from Inter Milan to replace David de Gea, prioritising a ball-playing style that had served Manchester City well through Ederson. Onana struggled to replicate that model consistently in the Premier League, and a defeat to Grimsby in the Carabao Cup accelerated the decision to move on.

Johnson expects Darlow to bring more than just cover. “He comes for crosses, he’s bold, he’s got great communication — I remember in one of the games we were covering, you could hear him from the stands. He’s a very good shot stopper for someone of his age. He’s actually quite agile as well. He can get up to shots really quickly.”

The former Nottingham Forest and Newcastle goalkeeper was also regarded as a strong dressing-room presence at Elland Road, a quality United’s new coaching staff are likely to value as they rebuild the squad’s culture.
