Manchester United will complete the signing of teenage defensive midfielder Cristian Orozco from Fortaleza CEIF next month, following a preliminary agreement reached with the Colombian club in September. The 17-year-old cannot move to Old Trafford until he turns 18, which is why the transfer was delayed despite the deal being agreed last year.

Orozco made two substitute appearances and two starts in Colombia’s top-flight this season, featuring in 11 first-team squads in total. He was brought to Manchester in December for a visit that included a tour of Carrington and Old Trafford, as well as training sessions with United’s academy teams.

The midfielder attracted United’s attention through his performances at the U17 South American Championship, where he helped Colombia reach the final. The club view him as an exciting young talent with first-team potential.

Orozco arrives with a profile similar to Sekou Kone, the Malian midfielder United signed from Guidars FC for around £1 million in the summer of 2024. Kone had impressed scouts at the Under-17 World Cup before his move to Old Trafford, drawing a parallel with how Orozco came to United’s attention on the continental stage.

United have broadened their international academy recruitment in recent years, a shift driven in part by post-Brexit rules that restrict the club from signing players from Europe. Diego Leon, a defender signed from Paraguayan club Cerro Porteño last summer for a fee of £3.3 million rising to £7 million with add-ons, is another product of that strategy, though he did not make his senior debut in his first season and was restricted to academy fixtures. Kone, meanwhile, missed the first half of the campaign through injury before being loaned to Ineos-owned FC Lausanne-Sport for the second half.

Since Ineos assumed control of football operations at the club, the recruitment model for younger players has leaned toward high-potential signings from outside Europe — deals considered low-risk given the relatively modest fees involved, with significant upside if the players develop as hoped.
