Manchester United are set to complete the signing of Colombian teenager Cristian Orozco from Fortaleza CEIF next month, with the 17-year-old midfielder due to join after his 18th birthday. The club will assess Orozco at their Carrington training base before determining a development plan for next season.

United coaches will evaluate the youngster before deciding whether he remains with the club’s academy setup or is sent on loan. The expectation, based on the club’s recent handling of similar signings, is that Orozco will be kept in Manchester for at least one season to allow him time to adapt to life in England. United will also provide English lessons as part of his integration.

The club has drawn comparisons with the arrivals of Seko Kone from Mali and Diego Leon from Paraguay, both of whom spent a season with United’s Under-21s before progressing. Enzo Kana-Biyik followed a different route — loaned immediately to Ineos-owned Lausanne Sport — but that decision was informed by his prior experience of European football through Le Havre’s academy. Orozco, arriving from South America, is considered more comparable to Kone and Leon.

Despite his age, Orozco has already featured at senior level in Colombia’s top flight, appearing in 11 of Fortaleza CEIF’s first-team squads this season, making two substitute appearances and two starts. United view him as a player with genuine first-team potential rather than a speculative academy addition.

Orozco visited Manchester in December, touring Carrington and Old Trafford and taking part in training sessions with United’s academy teams — an early indication of the club’s intent to bring him in.

United’s increased focus on young talent from outside Europe is a direct consequence of post-Brexit regulations, which restrict their ability to sign players from EU countries. The club has responded by broadening its scouting network across South America and Africa, pursuing what it regards as low-risk, high-reward acquisitions with long-term first-team potential.
