Manchester United target Summerville and Fernandes in double West Ham raid
Manchester United are weighing a double swoop on relegated West Ham, with winger Crysencio Summerville and midfielder Mateus Fernandes both identified as summer targets as the club reshapes its squad.
Manchester United are monitoring two West Ham players — winger Crysencio Summerville and midfielder Mateus Fernandes — as they look to capitalise on the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League this summer.
Interest in both players is at an early stage, but United see West Ham’s drop to the Championship as an opportunity to strengthen in multiple positions. Summerville is on a list of candidates as United seek to add a left winger to the squad being assembled under Michael Carrick, while Fernandes is viewed as a potential component of a midfield rebuild.
Summerville, a Netherlands international, cost West Ham £25m when he joined from Leeds two years ago. He was named the Championship’s player of the year in 2023-24 and scored in five consecutive Premier League matches for West Ham in January and February, though his form was not enough to prevent the club’s relegation. He also scored his first senior international goal in the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw with Japan at the World Cup.
On the midfield front, United are also closing in on Atalanta’s Brazilian international Ederson, with a deal reported to cost around £35m, which would make him their first signing of the summer window.
The left-wing picture at Old Trafford remains complicated by the situation surrounding Marcus Rashford. Barcelona have not yet taken up their option to sign the England international on a permanent basis, meaning Rashford could return to United — though the club may still look to sell him.
The potential double move on West Ham underlines United’s intent to use the relegated club’s enforced squad clearout as a recruitment opportunity, with Summerville and Fernandes representing different but complementary targets in their summer overhaul.
