Manchester United are considering a free transfer move for Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow, according to The Athletic, as the club looks to reshape its goalkeeping options ahead of next season.

Darlow, 35, is set to leave Elland Road when his contract expires, ending a three-year spell during which he made 38 appearances. He emerged as Leeds’ first-choice keeper in the final stretch of last season, usurping Lucas Perri as Daniel Farke’s side secured their Premier League survival. Leeds are understood to want to retain him and are in talks over an extension, though Darlow’s desire for guaranteed first-team football may complicate those negotiations.

United’s interest centres on finding a backup to Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who impressed during a period of defensive instability at Old Trafford. Both André Onana and Altay Bayindir have struggled for consistency, and the club’s goalkeeping picture is expected to shift significantly in the summer. Onana’s future is reported to lie elsewhere, while Bayindir has been linked with a return to Turkey. Radek Vitek, who won multiple awards on loan at Bristol City, is expected to depart either on a temporary or permanent basis.

Darlow’s availability on a free transfer mirrors a recruitment approach United have used before — targeting experienced, homegrown players whose contracts have lapsed. Michael Carrick’s side are said to have discussed the Wales international at official level, though no deal is imminent.

For Darlow, the decision carries international implications. He has earned 15 caps for Wales and has been a regular starter under Craig Bellamy. A move to Old Trafford as a backup could jeopardise that standing, and the 35-year-old is expected to seek assurances over his role before committing to any club. That dynamic may ultimately work in Leeds’ favour if they can offer him a clearer path to regular minutes.
