Manchester United target five summer signings as Carrick prioritises midfield reinforcements
Manchester United are pursuing up to five new signings this summer, with Atalanta midfielder Ederson already agreed for an initial £35 million. Targets in midfield and at left-back are being explored, though manager Michael Carrick insists the club's academy pipeline must remain open.
Manchester United have identified five positions to strengthen this summer, with Atalanta midfielder Ederson set to become the first signing of the Michael Carrick era in a deal worth an initial £35 million.
The club’s return to the Champions League has sharpened the need for a deeper squad. After playing just 40 games across all competitions last season, United’s hierarchy recognises the additional fixture load will demand greater quality and cover throughout the squad.
According to The Times, several midfielders are on United’s radar beyond Ederson. Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni, West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba have all attracted interest. Elliot Anderson has also been linked, though Manchester City are reported to be leading that particular pursuit.
A striker is also a priority following the permanent departure of Rasmus Højlund from Old Trafford. A left-back is another area under discussion, with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall identified as a potential target.
Despite the ambition in the transfer market, Carrick and the club’s leadership have been clear that the route to the first team for academy players must not be closed off. The former United midfielder, appointed manager in January, wasted little time in reintegrating Kobbie Mainoo after taking charge, and the club are keen to see more homegrown talent follow a similar path. Teenager Shea Lacey was among those given opportunities last season.
Carrick’s approach has been welcomed by academy families who felt his predecessor, Rubén Amorim, was too reluctant to use young players — Mainoo in particular was often reduced to a bit-part role under the Portuguese coach.
United are also preparing for a significant outgoing wave that will both free up squad places and generate transfer funds. Manuel Ugarte, Joshua Zirkzee, Marcus Rashford, and André Onana are all available for sale, while Casemiro has departed following the expiry of his contract. Jadon Sancho, who spent the season on loan at Aston Villa, is also expected to leave on a free transfer.
