Manchester United secure key land deal to unlock 100,000-seater Old Trafford replacement
Manchester United have purchased a 25-acre plot from Indurent, approximately 350 metres north-west of Old Trafford, giving the club the majority of land needed to proceed with their planned 100,000-seater stadium.
Manchester United have struck a land deal that clears the path for their proposed 100,000-seater stadium, acquiring a 25-acre triangular plot located approximately 350 metres north-west of Old Trafford from Indurent, a Blackstone portfolio company specialising in industrial space.
The purchase resolves a significant obstacle that had stalled the project for over a year. United had been in prolonged negotiations with Freightliner to acquire land behind the Stretford End, but those talks broke down, prompting the club to identify alternative sites. The newly acquired parcel sits between Wharfside Way, Europa Way and John Gilbert Way, and United say they now hold the majority of the land required for the development.
Design work, which had been paused during the Freightliner negotiations, can now resume. Architecture firm Foster + Partners is set to oversee the stadium’s design, and the club says it believes the Indurent deal was struck at a fair price.
Collette Roche, CEO of United’s new stadium development, described the acquisition as a turning point. “Today’s news highlights the progress we’re making towards a world-class new home for Manchester United and represents a significant milestone as we move into the next phase of development,” she said. “Being able to build so close to Old Trafford allows us to preserve the heritage, traditions and rituals that are so important to our fans.”
Roche added that the project is “a generational opportunity” aligned with local and national growth ambitions, and that securing the right land had been “absolutely critical” to delivering a stadium that “honours our past and is ready for our future”.
United confirmed they will engage directly with businesses affected by the plans to support them through the transition. The Mayoral Development Corporation is due to publish the wider masterplan for the Old Trafford regeneration project, along with details of a formal consultation period, on 9 July. Supporters will continue to be consulted throughout the stadium design phase, the club said.
Work on acquiring the remaining land parcels is ongoing, though United indicated that is not expected to present a significant problem.
