Manchester United expect Dermot Mee to sign new deal as contract deadline passes
Goalkeeper Dermot Mee became a free agent on Tuesday as his Manchester United contract expired, but the club remain confident the 23-year-old Northern Ireland Under-21 international will sign the extension already on the table.
Manchester United are confident goalkeeper Dermot Mee will sign a new contract despite his current deal expiring on Tuesday, leaving the 23-year-old technically free to leave Old Trafford.
United made Mee a formal offer earlier this month and the club’s position has not changed — they expect him to put pen to paper and remain part of the first-team goalkeeping setup. When announcing the offer, United described the academy graduate as having “played an important role in first-team training in recent years, whilst representing United’s Under-21s side in competitive fixtures.”
Mee joined the club from Walsall at the age of 16 and has made 27 appearances for United’s Under-21s. His most senior football came during a loan spell at Altrincham in the National League early in the 2022/23 season, where he played four times. He has also had stints at Trafford, Runcorn Linnets and Witton Albion.
Should he stay, Mee is expected to continue as fourth-choice goalkeeper, training and travelling with the first team. He was an unused substitute on five occasions during the 2024/25 season but did not make the bench in the previous campaign.
The wider goalkeeping picture at Old Trafford is shifting considerably this summer. Senne Lammens is now established as the club’s number one, while Tom Heaton has signed a new deal to remain as third choice. Andre Onana is set to return to Trabzonspor on loan, and Altay Bayindir is also expected to depart. United are actively seeking a new back-up goalkeeper before the window closes.
