Manchester United close to second Trabzonspor loan for axed goalkeeper Andre Onana
Manchester United are set to send Andre Onana back to Trabzonspor on loan for a second successive season after failing to secure a permanent sale, with the Turkish club covering the Cameroonian's wages.
Manchester United are closing in on a second consecutive loan deal to send goalkeeper Andre Onana to Trabzonspor, having failed to find a buyer willing to meet their asking price this summer.
United had sought a permanent sale of around £20 million for the Cameroon international — a figure required to stay compliant with the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Unable to secure that fee, the club will instead accept a loan arrangement that includes a fee and full wage coverage from the Turkish side, with the PSR threshold set to fall next year due to amortisation.
Onana spent last season at Trabzonspor after being dropped by manager Ruben Amorim at the start of the campaign. He started every league game for the Turkish club, who finished third in the Super Lig, and earned strong reviews from the local press. His spell in Turkey also brought a financial benefit: the country’s 20% tax rate for Super Lig players effectively delivered Onana a pay rise on his existing United contract.
With Onana away, Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens emerged as United’s undisputed first choice after making his debut in October. Lammens went on to win the Premier League’s Transfer of the Season award following an impressive debut campaign at Old Trafford, remaining unbeaten in 28 of his 32 appearances and keeping eight clean sheets.
Altay Bayindir, who was initially handed the No.1 shirt by Amorim before Lammens took over, is also expected to leave United this summer in search of regular first-team football elsewhere.
Onana, 29, is contracted at Old Trafford until the summer of 2028, meaning United retain his registration and the option to revisit a permanent sale at a later date.
