Manchester United clarify bonus fears over new anti-touting supporter role
Manchester United have confirmed that a newly advertised 'supporter escalations executive' role will be included in the same incentive scheme as all other club staff, pushing back against fan fears that bonuses would be tied to upholding sanctions.
Manchester United have moved to address supporter concerns over a job advert for a dedicated ‘supporter escalations executive’, confirming the role carries no performance bonus linked to the outcome of fan appeals or disciplinary decisions.
The club posted the vacancy to oversee “complex supporter escalations, investigations and appeals” as part of its ongoing effort to tackle ticket touting. The advert’s reference to the club’s annual incentive scheme immediately alarmed supporters, who feared the new hire’s bonus could be contingent on processing a high volume of appeals or defending sanctions against fans who challenged them. United sources have since clarified that the incentive scheme applies uniformly to all employees and is not specific to this position.
The clarification comes against a backdrop of significant tension between the club and its fanbase. Over the summer, United launched a crackdown on ticket touts, but the operation cast too wide a net, leaving hundreds of innocent supporters required to prove they had not broken any rules. The backlash was severe enough to unite the club’s various supporter groups, who took the rare step of issuing a joint statement condemning the approach and demanding greater transparency.
In September, United published a formal update on the investigation, revealing that 685 fans had been stripped of their season tickets, while a further 464 had been sanctioned or warned. The club maintained that the operation had “broken up large-scale organised networks” of touts, but the figures did little to ease tensions. Supporters protested before the Manchester derby, with fan group The 1958 declaring that “a line had been crossed”.
The appointment of a dedicated escalations executive is intended to provide a clearer, more structured process for fans who wish to challenge decisions made against them. Whether the clarification over the bonus structure is enough to rebuild trust with a supporter base that remains deeply frustrated will depend largely on how the role functions in practice.
