Man Utd go all in for Fernandes as West Ham demand £80m for relegated midfielder
Manchester United are pushing hard to sign West Ham's Mateus Fernandes this summer, with the 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder reportedly keen on the move. West Ham's £80m asking price remains the key obstacle, with Arsenal, Real Madrid and PSG also in the running.
Manchester United are pressing ahead with a move for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, though the Hammers’ £80 million asking price threatens to complicate what is reportedly the player’s preferred destination this summer.
Fernandes, 21, is among the most coveted midfielders of the current transfer window, attracting interest from Arsenal, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. West Ham are reluctant to sell but may be compelled to do so in order to remain compliant with Financial Fair Play regulations following their relegation to the Championship.
The drop into the second tier adds urgency to Fernandes’ situation. He now faces a choice between returning to the Premier League or pursuing a move to one of Europe’s top leagues — a crossroads not entirely new to him, having previously left Southampton after their own relegation from the top flight. He joined West Ham in the summer of 2025 for £38 million and impressed throughout the campaign that followed.
United are confident that personal terms can be agreed, with Fernandes understood to be eager to play Champions League football — something United can offer after finishing third in the Premier League last season, a result that earned manager Michael Carrick considerable credit. The club are expected to table an opening offer later this week, though it will fall well short of West Ham’s valuation.
United view Fernandes as a player of significant potential but one who is yet to accumulate substantial top-level experience, making a fee in the region of £80 million a difficult sell internally. Committing the bulk of their transfer budget to a single signing does not appear to align with Carrick’s broader recruitment strategy.
However, Fernandes’ strong desire to move to Old Trafford could prove a useful lever in negotiations. United may look to use that ambition to negotiate a more favourable fee with West Ham — a dynamic that echoes last summer’s protracted saga between Newcastle and Liverpool over Alexander Isak, a deal that eventually went through despite the selling club’s initial reluctance.
With Arsenal and PSG also circling, West Ham appear intent on triggering a bidding war. Whether United are willing to match that competition financially, or find a creative route to a lower fee, will likely define whether the deal gets done.
