Man United's midfield backup plan: Four targets if Ederson deal collapses over knee concern
Manchester United's £38m move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson is under threat after medical tests raised concerns over a previous meniscus injury. With Manuel Ugarte also ruled out long-term and Casemiro gone, United are weighing alternatives including Alex Scott, Manu Kone, Joao Gomes, and Aurelien Tchouameni.
Manchester United’s pursuit of Ederson remains alive but fragile, with medical tests having flagged concerns over a previous meniscus injury in the Atalanta midfielder. United had agreed a deal worth just over £38 million and settled personal terms with the Brazil international before the World Cup began, but the fitness question has cast serious doubt over whether the transfer will be completed.
The stakes are high for Ruben Amorim’s side. Manuel Ugarte suffered a serious knee injury representing Uruguay at the World Cup and faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines, while Casemiro has left Old Trafford this summer after his contract expired. A failure to land Ederson would leave a significant gap in United’s midfield heading into the new season.
Should the deal collapse, United have several alternatives in their sights.
Aurelien Tchouameni had been identified as a top-tier option, but the Real Madrid midfielder now appears set to remain at the Bernabeu, with Jose Mourinho reportedly preparing to hand him a new contract. That door looks effectively closed, even as United close in on a separate £50m signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea.
Joao Gomes offers a more attainable route. The Brazilian impressed throughout a difficult season for Wolverhampton Wanderers and, with the club now in the Championship, his price could be more manageable. A move to Atletico Madrid for £38.3 million fell through late in negotiations, keeping him available — though Liverpool are also believed to be monitoring the situation.
Alex Scott is another name on United’s list following a standout campaign for Bournemouth, during which the Cherries qualified for European football for the first time in their history. The 22-year-old England international is Premier League-proven and viewed as a long-term prospect, but Bournemouth have placed an £80 million valuation on him and hold the leverage of a contract running until 2028. Arsenal are also credited with interest, and Bournemouth are pushing to extend his deal further.
Manu Kone rounds out the shortlist. The France midfielder has built a strong reputation at club level and has featured prominently in Les Bleus’ setup, making him one of the more credible contingency options if United need to move quickly.
United’s midfield rebuild this summer has been complicated at every turn, and the uncertainty surrounding Ederson only adds to the pressure on the club to find a workable solution before the window closes.
