FIFA confirms kick-off time for Norway vs England quarter-final despite storm threat in Miami
The FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final between Norway and England will proceed as scheduled on Saturday at 23:00 CET at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, according to FIFA, despite concerns over potential thunderstorms in the region.
FIFA has confirmed that the World Cup 2026 quarter-final between Norway and England will take place at the originally scheduled time on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. Concerns about possible weather disruption were not enough to change the programme.
Since Friday, English media had questioned whether the match would go ahead at the announced time, with some even suggesting FIFA might consider a postponement due to potentially severe thunderstorms in the region. The protocol in place requires play to stop as soon as lightning is detected within a thirteen-kilometre radius of the stadium, followed by a thirty-minute countdown before any resumption is possible. If another lightning strike occurs within the same perimeter, the counter resets to zero.
According to The Evening Standard, thunderstorms did rumble through the night from Friday to Saturday before conditions improved around six o’clock local time. Temperatures expected an hour before kick-off are around 33°C, with a heat index exceeding 40°C. The risk of rain is estimated at 33%, but the risk of thunderstorms does not exceed 6% at the time of the match.
The Three Lions are no strangers to the logistical challenges of this World Cup: their round-of-16 match against Mexico, won 3-2, had already been delayed by an hour. A stoppage during the match for weather reasons remains technically possible on Saturday evening, but current conditions make it unlikely.
This quarter-final comes at an advanced stage of the tournament. France qualified for the semi-finals by eliminating Morocco (2-0), joined on Friday by Spain, who defeated Belgium (2-1). The winner of Norway vs England will learn their opponent following the fourth quarter-final.
